ISOPAK Carriers offer a unique dual-material composition
for extraordinary protection and easy testing
Since 1982, R.H. Murphy Co., Inc. has been synonymous with innovation in plastics engineering. The
culmination of that leading-edge experience is our family of patented ISOPAK carriers--devices so good
they're changing the way manufacturing professionals think about semiconductor handling. With ISOPAK
technology on your side semiconductor product visibility and quality assurance soar. Engineers agree
R.H. Murphy's ISOPAK carriers are the best method available today to meet the demands of exacting 'test
in carrier' procedures.
What is ISOPAK?
ISOPAK carriers are an innovative approach to housing ICs in a safe bi-material environment offering
static dissipation and lead isolation. In essence, ISOPAK carriers function as dynamic housings that
allow virtually umlimited access for testing and diagnostics. The result is superior device protectlon
and extremely high accuracy in testing. ISOPAK carriers have been consistently rated as a preferred method
to safely house and test ICs throughout demanding post-manufacturing processes, keeping them secure until
they're needed at the sub-assembly stage of your operation.
How do ISOPAK Carriers work?
Quite simply, by isolating ICs from harmful static discharge and protecting their delicate components from
careless handling. To accomplish this, ISOPAK carriers are comprised of two components:
1. A Conductive Material (S.R. <105 ohms/square) is used in the Carrier Frame and Cover
(if required), and
2. An Isolating Material (S.R. <1010 ohms/square) is used where device leads are supported.
The conductive material dissipates triboelectric charges which develop when the carrier moves across any
surface. Both materials are assembled to form a sturdy one-piece carrier. The IC rides safely ensconced
within the carrier, yet remains accessible for electronic evaluation. ICs can be loaded into the carrier
immediately after pin straightening and stay there throughout the entire testing, burn-in, labeling, packing,
and shipping processes. The result is a sharp reduction in problem-prone manual handling, and a dramatic
increase in quality assurance.
Readily accommodates automatic testing
Our carriers use a precise orientation scheme, based on the IC's lead layout, to properly position the device
for testing. Consistent lead spacing provides a reduced tolerance range which facilitates 'pick and place' test
head link-up operations. The result is a more finely tuned method of implementing precision auto-test procedures.
ISOPAK Carriers combine protection with device access
Triboelectric charging is the major cause of device failure. To prevent static buildup and potentially destructive
triboelectric charging, ISOPAK carriers utilize a volume conductive material that acts as a static dissipator.
When used in conjunction with a safe, non-conductive material--to isolate the semiconductor's sensitive areas
from inadvertent electrical contact--an ideal balance of protection and accessibility is achieved. With this
kind of precision engineering, it's easy to see how ISOPAK carriers stop the problems of bridging, leakage,
crosstalk, and bleeding before they start.
Standard-compliant design
Where appropriate, ISOPAK carriers incorporate JEDEC Standards to ensure
smooth operation in automated environments. In today's world of ultra-precise manufacturing processes,
semiconductor carriers from R.H. Murphy Co. are part of the solution, not part of the problem.
